TA-33 MDA E Surveys & Preparation of Phase II Investigation Report for Chaquehui Canyon Aggregate Area

LOCATION: Los Alamos National Laboratory, NM

CLIENT: Newport Nuclear News BWXT – Los Alamos (N3B)

BGI is performing a quick-turnaround project for N3B to conduct walkover geophysical and radiological surveys at MDA E located within a Property Protection Area in Technical Area 33 (TA-33) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). TA-33 is used for experimental research activities that support the creation, delivery, and maintenance of innovative detection and energy-projection systems for remote applications in space and around the world. MDA E consists of several Solid Waste Management Units and Areas of Concern consisting of waste disposal pits and structures, as well as storage areas, and an underground test chamber and shaft. The purpose of the walkover surveys is to identify subsurface anomalies and former waste disposal sites and debris associated with elevated radioactivity.

In addition, BGI is preparing the Phase II Investigation Report for Chaquehui Canyon Aggregate Area in accordance with the June 2016 Compliance Order on Consent between DOE and the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The report will include the results of Phase II investigation and completed remediation activities. The BGI Team will evaluate the analytical data collected, conduct human health and ecological risk assessments, determine the nature and extent of contamination for each contaminant of potential concern, and make recommendations if additional sampling and/or remediation are necessary to complete site characterization and cleanup.
