BGI Provides Contributions to Playground Safety

BGI's NASA Occupational Safety Program Lead, Steve Hull, goes above and beyond to ensure safety at NASA Goddard.

BGI would like to recognize the efforts Mr. Steven Hull, our Comprehensive Occupational Safety Program Lead at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, for going the extra mile. Steve took the initiative to act beyond the BGI contract scope to provide safety planning and design services for the new playground at the NASA Goddard Day Care Center.  Steve has a strong background in working with similar facilities, and he contributed a number of important recommendations to help the children, including:

  • Equipment placement based upon landscape slope.
  • Working with NASA-Goddard Facility Maintenance to assure that the protective playground surface material was applied in a safe manner by the subcontractor.
  • Removal of protrusion and entanglement hazards.
  • Selection of age-appropriate swings.
  • Implementing injury-prevention measures by allowing children to swing only toward a safety-favorable direction.
  • Inspecting the newly installed playground equipment and verifying that the equipment conforms to the Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines for playground equipment.

Steve has truly exemplified the part of the BGI Mission Statement that says, “We are a group of experienced, energetic professionals who care about human life and the safety of people as they work, play and enjoy living. Safety and health is the core of our company. Every injury can be prevented.” Contributions such as Steve’s are one of the primary reasons that BGI has such a large degree of work based on repeat customers and word-of-mouth references.
